Lecture Series: Introduction to Digital Humanities

What does it mean to live a "good life" in the digital age? In this talk, I explore digital humanism through the lens of ethics, focusing on how we can shape technology to align with human values. I begin by defining digital humanism and addressing common misconceptions—some of which are not only misleading but also intentionally harmful. I will argue that digital humanism is a form of critical post-humanism that extends far beyond traditional humanist perspectives, and I will challenge recurring critiques that misrepresent its aims. Beyond theory, I will examine the shifting power dynamics in our digital lives. Digital technologies often reconfigure power in subtle yet profound ways, influencing individuals, communities, and geopolitical structures alike. I will highlight why the growing reliance on digital systems for policing and governance—widely supported by policymakers and the public—is fundamentally misaligned with the vision of a "good life digital." Ultimately, I advocate for a more conscious and deliberate approach to digital humanism—one that empowers individuals and societies to take charge of their technological future rather than passively adapting to it.
